Board of Control

The Board of Control (BOC) was first established in 1913 as a student committee that had jurisdiction over upholding the honor system. The BOC reflects and embodies Caltech's deep history of self-governance and the Honor Code. The BOC is comprised solely of undergraduates and continues to review and adjudicate cases and educate the community on the Honor Code and standards for academic integrity.

BOC chairs are elected during the Spring term ASCIT elections. Chairs review all reports of academic integrity violations and lead the investigation and adjudication process by holding preliminary meetings and presiding over Full Board hearings. BOC chairs also serve as a resource to the faculty who may have questions about the BOC process or how to proceed when there is a possible violation.

Representatives are elected by house during the winter term and are a resource for members of each house and the Caltech community. In addition to serving on cases, BOC reps are available to answer questions about the BOC process, to serve as an advisor or silent witness to respondents going through a process, and to help members of the community understand expectations for academic integrity and the Honor Code as it applies in academic settings.
